Where to mount the stereo?

Postby scenicjetboats » Mon Jul 20, 2020 10:03 am

Looking for ideas no where and how to mount a new stereo in my 06 North River Commander. Friend of mine put his under the main dash but it's hard to get to and read so not sure I want to do that. The junk box is full and storage is a premium for me so that's out. Any pictures or ideas are appreciated. Thanks

Order in a box with watertight cover and place your unit vertical between seat and side of boat. Mine is mounted in the dash and everyone that gets out of the boat through door hits it and turns it on. The river running is hard on it also.

Not a lot of room there. Are you putting in an old style (1 din maybe) they make waterproof covers for them. Bigger ones they do not.

Yes it's a smaller one. I have one in one of those cover/boxes right now under the left side dash/gunale. Of course I can't reach at all while running. Was hoping someone had a really great idea. Otherwise I'll probably stick under the steering wheel where Wilson4 did his. Just really hard to see/adjust when it's at your knees. The Vhf is on the rights side gunale by my right thigh. Not alot of extra room there but maybe .

They make box's for them that could mount on the top of your dash. I don't know if any of those pics were yours or not. But depending on how big your fishfnder is you could mount it on top of the stereo box. :Drink: :Drink:

Thanks for the idea John, I have an older Garmin which is pretty good sized but will look tonight to see if they would fit side by side.

I have mine mounted below left side of drivers console. It works pretty well there for me, it's a single din Bluetooth deck, no CD. I'll try and put up a picture.

That doesn't look bad. Not a knee knocker? I'll play with that idea tonight. Thanks

On my 06 North River Commander, the stereo is flush mounted in the passenger glove box. There is a remote that is mounted to the gauge panel to control the stereo from the driver side. Only issue I have noticed with it is loose items in the glove box can push up against the stereo buttons causing the remote not to work.

I have an 05 Commander and I mounted it under the dash. I got one with a remote so I don't have much trouble with it not being in plain sight.

Have you thought about the round gauge style? Not sure of the depth of your gunnel but almost looks like you could mout next to where your mic is hanging.

I can't say I've had an issue with the placement there. Maybe if I had the seat all the way forward, and as high as I could get it. There could be some knee contact if you twisted to get out of the seat. It's enough to the left that when sitting and driving knee space is clear.

Kenwood has a phone app that works as a remote. The features aren't spectacular, but I can control the stereo from my pocket while running the kicker. Just have to make sure I don't hop in the water with my phone! :Scared:

Thanks for all the input guys. Thinking I may go where Jetdaddy put his. I sat in the seat last night and there's actually more clearance than I thought. I wish I could go junk box but storage is a premium as I have to carry extra life jackets, paperwork and such doing tours. Thank you everyone.

My stereo went caput a year ago. I could never read the dial. Too small letters and numbers, and too cluttered, even with cheaters. I almost bought a new one when I ran across a portable Bose speaker. I grab it from my house on my way to the boat. Works with any connectable device. I mostly run Spotify from my phone. For you poor old bastards like me, who is terrible with tech.,I want to tell you it's easy to use. Gordo

So I didn't grab a picture but decided on the firewall about 2/3 from the floor and offset from the heater vent. There is a reinforcing tube run horizontally on the firewall so right below it. Was going to go drivers side but because of antanea wire length and not wanting to drill another hole we went shotgun side. Even though marine stereo went with a waterproof smoked cover. The stereo is remote control. Ran main power from a toggle on the dash so I flip it and have tunes. After 1 day I'm pretty happy. I'll edit this when I get a picture. Thanks guys
