North River Floor Hatch

Postby ReelFowl » Sun Nov 26, 2017 6:17 pm

Anyone added a floor hatch between the two front seats on their Commander? I know it's shallow there, but storage is such a premium on this boat.

Don't those have a Belly Tank?

There is space in front of the belly tank. Some of the commanders had a hatch there factory. I added one to my trapper with an insulated stainless box. It would hold about a 12 pack. I just used to wood floor cut out as the hatch.

My 2004 Commander came with a floor storage hatch in that spot. I now have a 1994 20’ Ranger and I added a hatch when I replaced the floor. It’s a wet storage unless you add a box like Allen said.

Wet storage is fine. Just want to get my bumpers down there and whatever else fits.
What size hatch did you all use?

An in floor 12 pack sounds great but I'd rather get the bumpers out of sight!

Thanks,

Rob

The Commander also had floor storage on both sides of the engine cover that held my oversize fenders. I'll measure the current hatch and try and find some pictures of the old boat.

Thanks for the pictures! Those both your boats? Looks like the few extra feet of length in the commander allowed the hatch to be a bit back from the bow doors. Looks good!

The Commander was mine until the X wanted half it’s value. It’s a fishing machine now somewhere in Washington.

The 1994 is my current boat.

Bummer, glad to see your still on the water. I appreciate the information.

I like how you cut yours in. I'm thinking about just buying a temptress floor hatch and making it a quick project.

How far forward does the fuel tank go. I have a 21’ commander. How deep is the forward area?

The fuel tank is directly behind the cross member that you can see in kroys picture. Your commander may have more but it depends on the size of the tank and year. They changed things around a little over the years.

I'm planning to use a hole saw to cut an initial 4 or 5" hole, stick a tape measure down there to get some measurements and order the hatch.

I'll let you know how far back the cross member is from the doors to the bow storage area.

I looked at doing that on my boat. I just couldn't justify the hassle for only enough space to hold some lines.

I drilled a hole yesterday. Bumpers will fit there too. More space then I expected. Getting something like bumpers out of the way is going to be very nice.

Cool. Please keep us updated on how it goes. I only carry 2 bumpers on my boat since I really never go anywhere with docks. They fit nicely between one of the side seat boxes and the side of the boat. Totally out of the way and I don't know what else I would put there.

Cut the hole and installed the hatch. I opted to use a Bomar hatch instead of fab my own. If/When I replace the floor, I will make a custom hatch that sits flush.

After hearing about how small the storage area would be, I was surprised with how well this went.

I've got 4 good sized bumpers down there and some space to spare.

I needed to get the bumpers out of the back jump seats since I cut some 8" speakers in there yesterday as well.

Nice! I've never seen jump seats like that in the back. Those are pretty cool too! I have 6x9 speakers in custom boxes at the stern on the gunnel shelf.
