If it was ignition I would think it would misfire at all rpm from idle to redline. However it does not do this.. only between 3800 to 4500 rpm. It is not backfiring or popping just hesitates for a quick second about every 20 seconds then comes right back in.

I was able to do compression tests on my 460 but i had the log type manifolds with the end dumps. If it is surging at higher rpm i would check the fuel system for correct pressure . If it is a mechanical pump it is hard to check the volume of fuel. Does it still have points ? If so check the dwell on a meter as that can make things weird but that is usually consistent. Do you have a water seperator in the fuel system? Check ohms on the wires , i think if it isnt fuel something is wrong with plug wires or coil. An ignition under load will show any weakness.

What style ignition system does it have. Duraspark and the replacement thin film can do so weird stuff. Does it do it cold or only warm?

Ignition is the distributor that came with the motor from Custom Weld on the Redline 460’s. It has a new cap, rotor and has a Petronix ignition module in place of the points.

I agree with upacreek I do a lot of mechanicing boats cars and race cars really don’t use exhaust gaskets they tend to burn out and cause leaks so a little red rtv and you are good to go best thing I learned from an old timer 25+ years ago

I’m going to say fuel issue not ignition put a gauge on it and see if it fluctuates at higher rpms

Just my opinion but I would round file that pertronics distributor and go get a Davis unified or similar hei based dizzy for it before I threw another dime at it.

They are vabration proof! These have been around for some time on street cars and 4x4 trucks they work well. I thought their description was funny ! There are others like a msd marine dist. Self contained or with a marine 6 box !

You say timing was checked, would that be at idle or cruise RPM. Leave it on the trailer, hook up a timing lamp and run the engine up to about 3200rpm. Is the timing stable? Should be about 32 degree at 3200rpm. Just one more check before you start tossing bucks at it.

I would back the trailer into water before i attempt that. Even with the berkley spinning that fast dry something is going to get warm on the jet.

Only happens under load, needs to be in the water.

If you are just checking for full advance it doesnt need to be under load but i would want water in the jet and the exhaust. I doubt it will miss on the trailer as the load wont be the same , they seem to cavitate when in a static position.
