Dennis,You need to be more specific.(pacific nw) Viking is right.THere are at least three possibilitys on the snake and Columbia rivers.Actual islands now or submerged rocks and islands now that did play a big part in steamboat traffic. There is a submerged rock and island just above Lyons Ferry Called steamboat rock.
take what i say with a grain of salt and a sip of tequila,I might not know what im talking about

Steamboat island is on the Snake River, don't know the river mile but it is immediately adjacent to Buffalo Rapids. It that giant (almost) bare cobble island just downstream from Buffalo Eddy:

When I was a young lad my grandparents lived on Steamboat island (in the sound), right on the beach. I spend countless hours walking that beach. Hunting for crabs, fishing, throwing sand dollars, and just wasting time the good way. Man I hate video games now! What a great place, and memory. If you ever have a chance, go there and walk. The bridge is only needed when its high tide. Thanks for stirring that memory Dennis. :-D
