1961 Film:Hells Canyon, Whitewater Thrills on Idaho's Snake

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCUAvAddWrY

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5-uFvHUbag

The quality is a little rough but they are a fun watch.

I am having trouble recognizing all of the big rapids scenes shown. Albeit (1) I am no expert (2) I assume that some of the rapids shown were upstream of the later constructed HC dam (3) I strongly suspect that some of the scenes are shown out of sequence with the commentary of the place names and scenes I do recognize. Where is "the Devil's Doorway" that is referred to in Part 2 at 7:09? Could it be Granite Rapid?

Cool videos. God awful quality. We've come a long ways since the 60s. I think I saw granite and upper Bernard in the first video.

If you believe the sequence of the film, Devil's Doorway was between Suicide Trail (Suicide Point) and the mouth of the Salmon. Pretty sure it wasn't the Imnaha. I don't know of a rapid in that stretch as big as the one shown with that much drop.

I found a 1970 news article from Dayton talking about a couple who rode the mail boat to Devil's Door, but it didn't describe where that was exactly. Come on, one of you river-rats with sand in your fur have to have knowledge of some place that once went by this name...?

I found the following nugget from a Sept. 22cd 1960 article in the Medford Mail Tribune:

"appropriately named R. B. (Dick) Rivers who has worked on the treacherous stream 23 of his 40 years. Rivers has the only regular boat service from Lewiston upstream to the Devil's Doorway, the entrance to famed Hells Canyon."

and the following from the June 1962 Life magazine:

" The Idaho Queen dives into the continent's deepest gorge in wild, spectacular Hell's Canyon on the Snake River. She bucks vicious rapids at Bobcat Bar, Cougar Bar and Devil's Doorway. Departure time is 6 a.m. at Lewiston and the fare is $25 for a one-day trip and $35 for overnight (200 miles), with salmon fishing thrown in."

I still cannot place where the Devil's Doorway is exactly located.

Further research has suggests that Devil's Doorway was also the name of the lodge that Dick Rivers started on Rankin bar, today Copper Creek Resort is located there. (See river mile 205.4 on this page https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/wallowa-whitman/specialplaces/?cid=fsbdev3_066578)

This still doesn't solve the mystery of the Devil's Doorway Rapid namesake shown in the film as there are not any serious rapids in the immediate vicinity of Copper Creek...
