Upper Holter

Postby Albany » Sun Mar 31, 2019 8:41 am

Morning,

Does anyone know how much use is on upper Holter or if/when Gates of the Mountains boat launch opens? My wife and I are supposed to be there for Easter but if their winter was anything like ours in Alberta I suspect we may have to delay....

Cheers

I'll drive out a take a look but I'm betting it is open now. About 10 days ago, the river channel was open but there was about 100 yrds of relatively thin ice in the area where the docks would be at Gates of the Mountains. Tim was out with the excavator breaking up the ice he could reach to hurry things along. Since then, it's been in the mid-40s (fahrenheit) during the day with lows in the mid- to hi-20s at night so I'm betting they are open for business. I'll check and post an update so please stand by.

Isn't the Gates of the Mountains dock a private one and have to pay a fee?

Bobcat - yes, the Gates of the Mtns is a private facility. It's $8 per day to launch/park (that was the price for the last several years but I haven't been there yet this year). But I fly fish the tailwaters below Hauser Dam a lot so it's worth it in that I save much time and gasoline by launching at the Gates.

Albany - I drove out to the Gates of the Mountains today. Still about 10 yards of ice extending from the ramp. It will go fast now as daytime temp forecasts are in the low to mid-50s (fahrenheit) during the day for the next several days and some rain in the forecast. Today, they were assembling the docks at the boat ramp. My guess is they will break up the remaining ice with their excavator and have the docks in place within the next 3 days. You should be good to go for an Easter or later outing.

Hey. So I got yelled at for rippin up past beaver creek. Apparently it’s a “no wake zone”. I’m not trying to start a rant, but mtfwp boat restrictions page doesn’t mention it for Missouri River. Does anyone know where I can find all the other restrictions? Any help would be good. Still learning the rivers and trying not to PO anyone. (Although the guy who educated me was very nice).

There is also a Big Sign on the bank of the river on the right side as you are motoring up.

I was up there this past weekend, and it is dang tough to motor up that river. I kept popping up on step while just trying to put my way up stream.

Yea, the guides were making a bigger wake by going slow than they would if they were up on step, but I wouldn't expect it to make sense. I made several early morning trips up this spring as soon as the ice went out and nobody else was on the river. Very beautiful countryman !

Nice Boat! What make and model is that thing. My father in law is looking at boats right now and that looks like it would fit the bill. He's currently looking at a 17' G3, but is till looking. Is that a Tracker?

Explorer industries, Edmonton AB. They build them with a tunnel, reverse chines and UHMW. Also way cheaper than a new G3... Call Dave. 1 780-430-8591 https://www.facebook.com/ExplorerIndustries/

Upper Holter to the dam is one of my favorite places to boat and fish.

Most of the guides are real dickheads though, they love to act like they own the place

AND when the fish are "Spawning" all the "Dickheads" are standing shoulder to shoulder on the boat ramps and will not move.
I have backed over many a tackle box putting the boat in.
