Morony Dam, access during high water

Morony Dam, access during high water

Postby MTviper 350 » Tue Jul 18, 2017 6:33 pm

I've heard some reports this year of someone boating up to Morony Dam to do some Pike fishing. Sounds like it was not a John boat either.
Has anyone heard of this or know if it could be done. Normally it's about 4.5k CFS and I think when they were spotted up there it was 13 or 15k CFS.

I am not sure where the CFS is at below Morony. I can't find it on the USGS river flow website. There is an access/boat launch called Widow Coulee on the south side of the river about 6 miles downstream from the dam. I used to fish below the dam as a kid, all I can remember was getting snagged up all the time.

That is a horrible ramp and a very long and rough road in .

Your way better off going to the "Carter Ferry" boat ramp. It is about 15 miles of river miles longer but the ramp is that much better.
There is a small water fall about 2 miles down stream of the dam , going up you can see it ,not the case coming back down.
The river bottom is all rock no mud be mindful of that.
I think MTRiverRunner has mad that run several times maybe drop him a line.

Thanks for the info on Widow Coulee & Carters Ferry. I haven't been back to Morony for quite a few years. Not sure how old that access is. I remember one time in the late 80's we went rafting down below Morony. It was a wild ride!. Probably the last time I was there...

That should be the link to the water flow. I think it's below Morony Dam but above where belt Creek runs in.

Thanks. That one makes sense now.
