Christmas Fire Run

Postby da prof » Tue Dec 08, 2015 7:53 pm

Anyone interested in doing a run around Christmas time and having a bonfire? I got spots on the sky and skagit that would work well.

Me too.

We should be running the Cowlitz now. The Toutle is over 50K while the upper is over 20K! More of the same crazy weather we saw a few weeks ago.

I am going to hit the snoqualmie again this weekend once the debris cleans up if the levels are still up. Should be able to make the falls.

Probably Friday or Sat. I would launch at either zuefler or what ever its called, ie fall city proper or I would prefer lower to get more of a run in. Fall city to falls is like a 2 minute ride.

I'm working Friday so Saturday could work. How much farther down is the next good place to launch. Longer run would be fun.

There are three to chose from. Fall city upper zefluer or how ever its spelled basically at the confluence with the raging, lower fall city just off the hwy and then carnation by the tolt. The run from carnation up is actually pretty fun and is my preferred option since it would turn into a nice hour or two run. It will all depend on the levels though. It's dropping like a brick right now. I'd like to see 10k plus at the powerhouse.

I am not suggesting this be the Christmas run either just something I was tossing around for this weekend. On the topic of the Christmas run lets talk about where and when?

On the topic of this weekend here are three launches that I have used on the snoqualmie, all worked well.

Zurfleuh Launch - Maybe 5-10 mins top to the falls ... I prefer launching lower.
https://goo.gl/maps/9VNQLi1Aujs

Neal Road Launch - Maybe a 20 to 30 minute ride up to the falls
https://goo.gl/maps/zi8YsfDZVCE2

Carnation Launch - About 45 to 1 hour up to the falls
https://goo.gl/maps/59knqqgd2JE2

It is getting less and less likely that we will see the flows needed to get up to the falls. The last rapid starts showing it's fence at around 6k to 7k and makes it really tough to squeeze by and even harder to get back down.

Right now it is Droppin like a brick

Back on the subject of a Christmas Fire Run. I am all down to get the boat out and meet up for some fire, ribs and other general feasting.

It sounds like it would only be a couple of us interested so lets come up with a plan so we can put it on the calendar. I have a feeling that due to the low numbers of chickens in the Greater Seattle Area we might have a less than staggering attendance with or without proper notice.

I will go wherever everyone else wants to go. Pick a river pick a time and let's make it happen only real thing to consider is water levels and a good spot for a fire.

Sunday it is 9am meet somewhere. Not enough water to really find good rapids so family fun should be OK. I'll say either sky, skagit or Snoqualmie, and I'll watch river levels and post tomorrow or Wednesday based on what looks best.

So sorry fellas looks like I'll have to work. First time we've ever been blessed with work over the holidays, can't complain even though I'd rather be running the river.

So water levels are not looking to primo. My take on things. I don't bring up the Satsop because then I would just wanna fish, oh and a jet boat rally there right now might have local fishermen taking shots at you.

The sky is crappy at this water level. Mainly because the launches are so low you can't put in at the good spots. IE Sultan and Monroe are both too low for my boat, that leaves hi-bridge on the snoqualmie with a run up the lower Sky or a launch on the snohomish and run up the lower sky. Thing is that at these lower levels the sky is nothing more than a shallow river and it is not really braided that well this year either so the enjoyment factor is low to me.

The Skagit has more water but again you can't go up past marblemount until after Jan 31st. That leaves you on the lower river which while pretty and fun is still nothing more than a big braided shallow river.

The Snoqualmie, while many folks like to naysay, is more fun in my view. The river bed holds deeper troughs and it has nice little shallow turns to manuever between the deep pools. There are a few log jams that as of Oct were passable but required a little finesse. There are quite a few Stumps and logs that require attention to weave through which adds some fun and the bonus is that you can get up to the power house where there are a few riffles to play in. No way you are making the falls though.

All considered My vote goes for the Snoqualmie.

Unless another suggestion is made that gathers more attendance lets do this.

Meet Saturday 12/26 @ 9:00am - Snoqualmie Launch at Carnation (Under NE Tolt Hill Rd. Bridge) https://goo.gl/maps/VXr8KqHNHwJ2
