Upper Salmon

Upper Salmon

If anybody wants to try the Upper Salmon near Shoup the next couple weekends, let me know. At predicted flows, waves aren't super big. It's more of a rock-reading test that will definitely keep you awake.

Sun the 13th anybody? Flow at 6-7K in Salmon is maybe best for noobs. Waves aren't too big and more rocks are farther under. Except for some. I think there have been 5 noob round trips at this flow, and rocks scored zero, including a run to Salmon. Launch at Cove Creek. Unless there's more rain than expected and everything goes to crap.

When you say "rocks"... are you referring to olivine, columnar basalt, schist, or other?

The kind of rocks that bounce down the canyon walls and land in the river. They are sort of soft and pillowy. And round. Except for some.

"Virtual rocks " that prevent me from going:

- Mother's Day weekend
- 7 hr drive there, 7 hrs back, then back to work Mon a.m. @ 545 local time
- boat is home, but have not completed the required shakedown cruise in local water before barging into a river

Someone should run this with mr. v

Old people have less to lose than young people, so should be relatively fearless. You would have been fine (probably) for about the first 4 miles. Then you reach The Slide, which is maybe a little more difficult. Sort of.

Peter,
What’s the highest level you have ran Corn Cr? Planning on going for the long weekend if it’s safe.

Last year it was somewhere north of 7 feet on the ramp. The first noteable big thing was Bailey. But that was still very doable. Black Creek has some big waves down the middle, but you can run either side easily. The north side is probably easier. I forget if its Gunbarrel or Stubb Creek, but one of them has some waves that can't be escaped. It's just confusing and wide, so the best line isn't obvious. I don't know about parking at Barth hot spring. The current could be fast, or maybe not.

At 6 feet things are pretty easy too.

By 4 feet Black Creek is definitely a thing.

Corn Cr was at 3.5’ when we ran Black Cr. last time. Any idea what the ramp readings correlate to at Salmon or Shoup?

Correlation isn't precise due to Middle Fork, which seems to be higher earlier in season. But I'm thinking 6' on ramp is roughly 6K in Salmon. 7.5' ramp is roughly 11K in Salmon. Flow at Shoup is roughly twice at Salmon flow.
