Lower Salmon Noobs 2018

Postby viking » Sat Oct 14, 2017 1:36 pm

As per the last 4 years, a noob Lower Salmon River run is planned late March or early April. At a gala event including a Jack Daniels fountain, dancing girls, and F-16 flyovers, royalty payments will be dispersed from our blockbuster video filmed during the 2017 noob run. Payment amount and currency type not yet known.

Depending on weather, flow, and Jupiter's orbit. Start at Pittsburgh landing and/or Heller Bar, meet at confluence, then run up the Salmon to approximately White Bird. This is roughly 75-80 miles each way. Gas will be stashed at White Bird to help everybody make the round trip. Overnight on river two nights probably.

If the flow is right, this run is reasonably Noob-friendly, but is not for the absolute beginner. If you have zero experience reading water, running medium big water, or have a severe knifey bow, then this run probably isn't for you. Most any inboard with a windshield and top will work. (An outboard with some hp will also work maybe.) A billion $ boat is not required. Frankenboats are welcome. For more info, search this forum for prior Lower Salmon Noob runs. Best noob flow is something like 8K to 15K CFS White Bird gauge. However, noobs have run successfully at much higher flow. See discussions from prior years on this forum.

If you also do one of the organized club runs in April (from Spring Bar east of Riggins), then you'll be familiar with about half the river between the confluence and Corn Creek. This will be helpful if you also decide to do the Corn Creek to confluence Noob round trip (approx June 1).

Less than 6 months to go! Snow is already accumulating!

Current snowpack is 7 times normal. 34 times normal in upper panhandle. Hopefully this trend continues.

So:

If I've only listened to Beth Hart and carry cold, salted leftover spaghetti to eat and hope that my pantograph wipers make up for my lack of an inducer, is it reasonable to expect that I have a high probability of finding the bottom of the river?

A person need not answer that if it makes them uncomfortable. Since I don't have a shop, my boat may be encased in glacial ice (Spokane in late March / Early April) so this may be moot.

Although, dad might be able to shuttle fuel to Hammer Creek... his truck will haul more gas vessels than my Pathfinder

Snow > 200% normal for this date. Full season behavior is below. Last year's snow actually wasn't much different from average. But it seems like there was a lot of rain as the snow came off, so flooding happened.

Global warming is out. The alarmists went with climate change then still couldn't forecast with any accuracy........now it's climate disruption. Covers anything with open ended blame.
