Elks vs Wolves

Postby DakotaFisher » Wed Aug 30, 2017 8:14 am

Hello Guys,
I read that the Idaho elks population decreased because of the growing wolves number.
I'do not know if this is true and if the issue is now fixed, taking the wolves number under control.
Any opinions?
Thanks

This is probably not the best place for this discussion, perhaps in hunting and fishing.
But yes the wolves have cut the population of elk down a bunch. Yellowstone elk population is down 75% since wolf introduction according to the government. Hunting of wolves has been allowed in Idaho for the last couple years. With the wolves going to be here all the time, the elk population will never get back to the levels when the wolves were gone.

You are right. I see that there is a specific section for hunting. Next time I will post this matters there. Anyway, thanks. The problem is that the wolfs are very, very, intelligent and smart. It will be very difficult to have a substantial reduction with hunting. The wilderness of Idaho is the perfect location for those carnivores.

Wolves are only a part of the reason elk numbers are down. no I am not a wolf hugging idiot. Elk numbers have tanked here in central and eastern Oregon, long before any wolves showed up. To many tags given out under a many different disguises, archery youth, muzzloader cow, etc. etc. poaching is equal to the legal harvest in most states, in Kate Browns liberal utopia in Oregon There is One, yes one, dedicated State Police officer to patrol all of central and eastern Oregon. Wolves are not the real problem, part of the problem, ya maybe.

Oregon had 14 wolves in 2009, the end of 2016 there were 112 Idaho had over 800 in 2009 and 786 the end of 2015 and that is after hunting wolves was opened up in Idaho with 358 wolf deaths in 2015. A big difference in the number of wolves killing elk. With so few wolves I can see why you say wolves have had little impact on elk in eastern Oregon, but that is not the case in Idaho. And with the growth of wolves Oregon is experiencing the impact on the elk will be greater in the coming years.

Yes wolves probably are the main part of the problem. Then there are probably contributory causes. In my opinion, three things impact the number of a species: predators, environment, tags number. I'm not able to weight the poaching impact. Watching in the internet sources and statistics, it appears that once the wolves number declines, because of the hunting, the elks number pop up.

The graph you posted show how many more tags they sell now then ten years ago? I know around here in hells canyon, they just keep increasing tags and seasons are longer. I'm sure before to long fish and game will be offering extra bull tags and 2 extra cow tags on top of the draw tag in hells canyon.
