Well..
There is a member doing one...its 110hp.

When you say Sport Jet ...its a ? with many answers.

The 1st version was a 90 hp 3 cyl. Force ( F'ed over rebuilt chrysler engine) vintage1991 ish
next was the 110 hp...I know little about it but was a touch better.

iirc there was a 140hp....not sure.

Mine is a 2000 vintage and Mercury V6, 175hp

There were several since then 220,240& a 250 briefly......going on memory here & its cloudy.

Then theres the Optimax or whatever is out now.

In short...Which Sport Jet are you thinking of useing?

Here is the one currently being built

I thought the same thing when i built mine. in comparison to watercraft engine

Pros:
don't have to build/buy suction line
Pretty plug and play
warranty, even if you have a brand new jetski i'm pretty sure warranty goes out the window when you gut it and turn it into a jetboat
no lining up pump and engine with shims

Cons:
Heavier, sportjet is 370lbs dry including pump and reverse bucket
Expensive(to buy new)!! I got a price of 12k CDN
Tall, check out even a 17' boat, they have a giant hump in the engine cover to clear the motor
Burns oil, only a con if you have a 4stroke watercraft, if go with 2stroke then its the same either way
poor efficiency drive, jet drives are bad but the 90 degree gear case eats power

Thanks for the reply’s! I was thinking 175

But mine also will be mini- ish I woukd like to build a 13’

I guess I could be ok if the motor house had a slight hump or maybe a little taller sides

The 175 is a bit easier than the others. Exhaust goes down through pump so don't have to build it into boat.
I have a good used unit for sale in sail section on here

I have built a few minis and I also wanted the room the sport jet offered. The sport jet is a very easy install. Practically a plug n play. My alumaweld was running a 175 never had a problem with it and always fired right up. I wanted an all purpose little fishing boat for the rivers and lakes . No need for monster engines. Usually am just trolling . Kept the boat nice and light . The 110 is not oil injected the weak spot in these engines was not invented yet .boat is looking great so far. Will post new photos soon . Almost done paint job just a couple little pieces left . Would love to test drive before Christmas but that might not happen.

Doesn't the 175 exhaust exit through the jet? (less plumbing = easier install)

Lately I've seen neglected fiberglass boats with a 175 for as little as a couple grand.
(Seems like the value plummets when the seat cushions get ugly.)

Thought about buying one and a stack of sawzall blades. :-)

There's a 200 optimax in my area they're asking $2500 for, but it's in disorganized pieces on a pallet. What should something like that go for? I'm a bit sceptical without a video of it running, and knowing who did the tear-down. I'd rather have a running donor and do the extraction myself.

I found an old sea-ray jet boat with a sport jet I can pick up for $300, but it's only a 140. Is that worth reviving and building a boat around - or should I keep hunting for a 175 or bigger?

I can see 2 x 140 being fun in a cat hull if I could scrounge a 2nd one for that cheap...

Would it be possible to leave enough room to upgrade to the bigger SJ's later?

Skip it

I'm pretty sure thats the Force set up.
Move on to Mercury.
They had several offerings starting @ 175 hp. and up to or over 250HP

The early force SJ are were junkish and parts are a pita.

There were several pump changes , some had incorporated exhaust (in pump) others did not.

I believe mercury took over the SJ in 95 give or take a year!
I put a 95 120 in my 13’ mini and it says merc all over it! I also want the 175 but the 120 in my mini runs fantastic and pushes 4 adults anywhere I need it to!

Thanks Apfeiffer82. What size is your mini, and what's it cruise at with the 120 and 2 or 4 adults?

If I can find cad models (or junked sport jets of different sizes to pull dimensions from) it'd be fun to see if I could leave enough room to make them interchangable.

I'll start checking with local shops to see if there are wrecked boats/engines to scavenge for dimensions even if they're just paperweights otherwise.

13x54
2 adults 45mph
2 adults 2kids 43mph
4 adults 40mph
It would cruise around 3400 rpms (25 mph) with 4 adults but with 2 adults I could cruise as low as 18 mph 3000 rpms
In all my searches for sport jet sizes the 120 is the tallest! My motor house wall is at 36” front to back and a 175 will go right in no problem the only issue I ran into was building up the motor house top to fit the 120 in there!
On a side note the motor box that’s welded in for the SJ’s are all the same I used a box out of a 200 SJ boat!

Is that 36" front of doghouse to back of transom?

Yes! from top of transom to front of motor house is 36”!
the 120 had about 6” of gap from the wall and it was tight to the transom! But that’s what the 175 required for gap on the front side so I was ok putting the wall at 36”
