running my jet motor out of water question.

Postby AlanCoderre » Sat Jun 09, 2018 11:50 am

I have a 2000 merc 40 hp jet and I cannot fond anywhere I would hook a hose up to to run it out of the water. Is there a way that I can do this? I am new to jet motors and I do not want to hurt the boat. Thank you

Yes, there is a bolt you remove and put in a flushing device, Mercury makes one. The Mercury part # is 24789A 1

My boat is sitting in the water at the dock and it's raining out, but I found a dark picture of my motor. It's the bolt just above the grease hose.

I use a large rubber stock tank +/- 100 gallon type. I trim out the motor a little and slide it under with boat on trailer. Then block it up when empty to get stock tank as high as it needs to be. Trim down, fill up and run motor. The initial fire up blows water out, but I keep the garden hose running in the tank to keep water fresh. It works good enough to test and start after winter etc. Stock tank has drain plug to empty when done.

I use a plastic barrel with drain in bottom to run mine on the trailer also since my outboard (Tohatsu 30 HP AE jet) does not have the plug for garden hose. Figured out if you put it in reverse as soon as it starts it pushes very little water out of the tank.
